Phototherapy: a treatment for jaundice where the exposure of skin to a light source converts unconjugated bilirubin molecules into water soluble isomers that can be excreted by the usual pathways.

Jaundice is caused by excessive bilirubin content in the human body and causes yellow or green pigmentation in the skin or sclera. Bilirubin is a by-product of the breakdown of old red blood cells and can cause skin irritation, white faeces, and dark urine.
